Growing up facing the challenges of poverty and food insecurity, I learned that sometimes the solutions you desire are out of reach and seem unattainable. I saw that innovation closed that gap, and that being a problem solver not only helped myself but my community. That is the ethos of Sunkissed, not just as a health-based brand, but one that is community centered.
Midway through our first selling season, we had a family purchase scoops for us. The mom seemed hesitant and further explained that her son had celiac disease among other food allergies. Her reaction to our ingredients list felt contagious, as her and her son gleamed while trying our flavors. We had other customers with similar dietary restrictions, where our product was the first frozen dessert they had been able to have in years. Being able to deliver that to people has been one of my most proud moments as a business owner, not just seeing our financial success, but allowing our community to trust us.
How Did You Come Up With The Idea For Your Business?
During high school, I was vegan for several years. The two things I missed the most: pizza and ice cream. Heavy on the ice cream part. I often purchased vegan ice creams, but one day I turned to look at the ingredients list and was a bit shocked. There a list of gums and fillers that I couldn’t even pronounce! Especially being an athlete at the time, I wanted something refreshing and clean, not heavy and full of filler. So we began working on Sunkissed Sorbet as an alternative to those who just want something clean, simple, and delicious!
